Cork and cork leather

The evergreen oak has been cultivated in the cork oak forests of Portugal, also known as the montados, for more than 2000 years. The trees are peeled for the first time at the age of 25, the bark is removed and processed. The peeled oaks are marked with the year markings so that the bark can slowly grow back over the next few years. Removing the cork bark does not harm the trees, if the old bark were not harvested, it would naturally fall off. The peeling is repeated every 9 years until the trees reach the age of approx. 200 years.

The cork cultivation and processing of this raw material makes a significant contribution to the sustainable development of rural areas and also creates a perfect relationship between human and nature. The raw material is completely plant-based and vegan, as well as being very light, heat-insulating and water-repellent. It’s environmentally friendly, 100% natural, renewable, recyclable and biodegradable.

The cork leather is a combination of natural cork and carrier textiles, which enables the preservation of the special properties and optimal use of the sustainable raw material. The cork leather is a very soft and skin-friendly material, gives us the feeling of warmth and at the same time it is water-repellent and very easy to care for. Thanks to the smooth surface, it does not catch dirt and dust and can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth.

The characteristics of the material are so advantageous that cork leather is used in the production of shoes, jackets and other outdoor accessories by well-known manufacturers. It is an undisputed alternative to real leather. The material processed into a carpet is ideally suited for bathrooms, hallways or as a kitchen runner, where the floor should be protected from dirt and scratches. In living rooms or children’s rooms, the simple and playful designs give you the opportunity to create an interesting design. Each product remains unique due to its unique grain.
